M23 bosses differ over peace deal

In Summary
The rebel leaders, currently in Uganda, disagreed on whether to return to the negotiating table and sign the declaration to end of war as demanded by Kinshasa government.
Kampala. The top leadership of the defeated M23 rebels has split into two factions, with one declaring that it is ready to sign the document with the Congo government.
The rebel leaders, currently in Uganda, disagreed on whether to return to the negotiating table and sign the declaration to end of war as demanded by Kinshasa government.
A group now led by a man who claims to be one of the principal negotiators, Mr Ngeve Kambasu, announced yesterday that it was ready to publicly renounce rebellion and sign the document to declare they will not fight against Joseph Kabila’s government.
Addressing journalists at the Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo, Mr Kambasu said: “As far as the document renders what we have discussed, we don’t bother about the title whether peace accord or declaration. We are ready to sign as far as it helps the Congolese people,” he said.
“We need to find a solution, Congolese people are tired, the international people are tired and we M23 are tired.”
Asked if Mr Bertrand Bisimwa, the head of M23 delegation to the peace talks agreed with him, Mr Kambasu said the former was only “a mere head of department like others and was eligible for removal provided he didn’t steer well the movement.”
The much awaited peace deal between the rebels and DR Congo government flopped on Monday.
While Kinshasa says it is committed to the peace process, it says it needs time to internalise the peace document.
It also demands that the M23 fighters make a public declaration renouncing rebellion.
