Dar es Salaam. Deputy minister for Communication, Science and Technology, January Makamba is expected to grace a prize-giving ceremony for the 2013 Mwanaspoti Footballer of the Year Award, it has been revealed.
Organised by Mwanaspoti, one of the newspapers published by Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), the eagerly awaited event takes place tonight at Mlimani City Hall.
The organisers have already named nominees ahead of the award in the event sponsored by Vodacom Tanzania.
Former Simba Sports Club’s defender Shamari Kapombe, now plying his trade with AS Cannes in France, is among the leading contenders for the award.
Four Mainland Premier League players are on the shortlist. They are Amri Kiemba, Haruna Niyonzima, Themi Felix and Kelvin Yondani.
The names of the nominees, voted for by soccer fans, were presented to a special committee led by former Simba and national team player, Zamoyoni Mogella earlier this week for verification.
Vodacom Tanzania head of Marketing and Communication, Kelvin Twissa said yesterday that the firm’s management feels proud to be associated with football development in the country. Twissa assured football stakeholders that his company will continue to team up with relevant authorities in turning around the country’s soccer fortunes. For his part, Mwananchi Communications Limited marketing manager, Bernad Mukasa said they were very happy that cabinet minister Makamba has agreed to grace the occasion.
The awards dubbed Mwanaspoti Vodacom football of the year 2013, is an event of its own kind in the country, according to Mukasa.
“Besides awarding the footballer of the year for 2013, there will also be hefty prizes for outstanding sportsmen and women in other categories,” he said.
He named the recipients as the best coach, best referee, women soccer footballer of the year, youngest player of the year, the best first eleven, most exciting goal, best foreign player in the Mainland Premier League.

  1. I start developing a fear of heights when I climb all the way up to those high balconies in some places, where figures down under look like tiny microscopic dots that certainly don't have any faces. But I like here.
