Kibanda in tears after receiving Sh10m worth of Mwangosi award

Absalom Kibanda burst into tears after he was named the winner of the
maiden Daudi Mwangosi award for heroic servantship in an occasion held
here yesterday.
Before 120 journalists and representatives from media houses from both within and outside the country, Mr Kibanda received the deservedly awards from the chief guest, Mr Tido Mhando, the managing director of Mwananchi Communications Limited.
The award gives a lifetime honour to the Channel Ten journo, Daudi Mwangosi, who was brutally killed while in the line of duty on September 2, last year at Nyololo Village in Iringa Region.
Mr Kibanda who also serves as the chairman of the Editor’s Forum, said: “I have decided to give 10 per cent of the money to God who spared my life. Half of the remaining 90 per cent will be donated to Mwangosi’s widow, Itika,” he said after thanking the Union of the Tanzanian Press Club (UTPC) for creating the award as an initiative to promote ethical journalism in Tanzania.

The panel of judges led by veteran journalist Nkwabi Ngwanakilala also comprised of Leyla Sheikh, Hamza Kasongo and Ayub Rioba.
The event’s chief guest, Tido Mhando called for serious implementation of ethics and professionalism following an emergence of people who use the media to serve a few politicians for their own benefits.
The award’s recipient must be a Tanzanian journalist, or photojournalist or a personnel working for either print or electronic media who performs heroic journalism while working in Tanzania.
