Dar es Salaam.Police have
arrested nine suspects in connection with breaking into Dr Sengondo
Mvungi’s house in Kibamba Township in Dar es Salaam and attacking him.
The nine will be taken to court after the Director of Criminal
Investigations approves the document submitted to his office by the
Police Force.
Briefing journalists in the city at the ministry of Home Affairs headquarters, the Dar es Salaam special police zone commander Suleiman Kova said nine suspects have been nabbed with relevant evidence, adding that they have managed to cooperate with the Police by showing exhibits.
“They showed our detectives machetes they used to harm Dr Mvungi…the Police Force is very grateful that it has maximum cooperation from both the family of the don and those who were apprehended earlier in connection with the incident,” commander Kova said.
Among the suspects apprehended are Mr Msigwa Popera, who according to Police, was a mason at Dr Mvungi’s home. Others are Chibango Magozi, Ahmad Ally, Zacharia Rafael, Mr White, Paul Jairos, Juma Khamis and Lengisho Semanke.
But in a quick response, the minister for Home Affairs, Mr Emmanuel Nchimbi, said Police would soon establish a new division of criminal intelligence which was initially a department within the Director Of Criminal Investigation’s office. He noted that the changes were part of the ongoing reforms within the Police Force.
Mr Nchimbi noted that the force had dispatched more than 2,000 police officers to all divisions countrywide as part of strengthening community policing. He said they had a special training at the Moshi-based police academy.
“Our aim is that all those trained at a rank of inspector will be a bridge between the community and the Police Force. If that system works, then we expect that the rate of offences will decrease instantly,” Mr Nchimbi said.
Giving details on the envisaged division of crimal intelligence which is due to start work before the end of December, Mr Nchimbi said Police would be offering special training to officers who would be working within the unit.
However, commander Kova said currently the Police Force was working closely with the office of the Chief Government Chemist for DNA testing of those who have been arrested.
Dr Sengondo Mvungi, a 2005 presidential candidate and renowned lawyer is in critical condition in hospital in South Africa after sustaining serious injuries in a robbery attack at his residence in the outskirts of the city. Dr Mvungi is also a member of the Constitution Review Commission and deputy vice chancellor at the University of Bagamoyo.
