Dar es Salaam. There is a need for Premier League clubs to establish football academies if Tanzania is to realise its long cherished goal to join the world’s best soccer playing nations, so says a cabinet minister.
Deputy Minister of Communication, Science and Technology, January Makamba has challenged clubs and other stakeholders to join hands with the government in turning around the country’s footballing fortunes, saying the sport’s development must first begin at the grassroots.
Addressing sports officials, fans and other stakeholders during Mwanaspoti Footballer of the Year gala at Mlimani City on Saturday night, Makamba said investing in youth sport was one of the best ways to produce a new generation of sports stars.
Also in attendance at the gala organised by Mwananchi Communications Limited (MCL), were MCL board chairperson Zuhura Muro, MCL Managing Director Tido Mhando, Confederation of African Football (CAF) honourary member Said El Maamry and former Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) president Leodegar Tenga to mention but a few.
“We have to invest in youth football and I think this is the tender age where you try to address some of our development concerns,” said the deputy minister.
He also heaped praise on MCL for staging Footballer of the Year gala, saying it a mark of appreciation to players who fare impressively in the Vodacom Premier League and other domestic competitions.
“Football development in this country needs a lot of investment, and outstanding players have to be honoured.
“I just want to compliment Mwananchi Communications Limited for such an initiative because it shows how much we appreciate our players,” he insisted.
Young Africans midfielder Haruna Niyonzima had a memorable night as he was named Mwanaspoti Footballer of the Year for 2012/13 season during the colourful gala.
The 22-year-old player fended off competition for the award from team -mate Kelvin Yondani, Shomari Kapombe, Simba’s Amri Kiemba and Kagera Sugar’s striker Themi Felix to lift the coveted prize.
